2019 Report

Potentially Leaving KC

Nearly three-quarters of area residents intend to stay in KC for the next five years. This is again strongly related to age, as 85 percent of older adults say they don't anticipate leaving in the next five years compared to 62 percent of those between 25 and 34 years of age. This might be expected, since older adults have generally lived in KC much longer than younger adults. Yet this relationship breaks down for race. Despite the fact that blacks have highest proportion of residents who have lived here more than 20 years, they are the least likely to see themselves staying the next five. More than 40 percent of blacks expect to leave the region within five years compared to 17 percent of whites and 28 percent of Hispanics and Asians.
