2019 Report

How Perception of Safety Varies by Location and Time of Day

Nearly all residents feel at least somewhat safe at home, with 90 percent feeling very safe during the day and 82 percent feeling very safe at night. More people feel very or somewhat safe in downtown (87 percent) during the day than walking alone in their own neighborhoods at night (74 percent), a figure that falls to below 60 percent for blacks, young adults and students. Only half of residents say they feel safe in downtown at night, however.
